RuneScape Introduction
RuneScape is a 3D Java based massive multiplayer online role-playing game ( MMORPG ), launched by Jagex Ltd. on January 4 , 2001 .
The game has a medieval fantasy theme similar to games such as Ultima Online or EverQuest but often with a less serious tone. One of the more unusual aspects of the game is the ability to do more mundane and non-violent tasks, as well as the more usual RPG fare.
On March 29, 2004, Jagex released a new version of RuneScape, with the older version referred to as RuneScape Classic. Although Jagex now refers to the new version as simply RuneScape, players often refer to the new version as RuneScape 2.
There are often over 100,000 players online at once, and on busy weekends, over a hundred and thirty thousand players, spread across its 89 (or 95, including RuneScape Classic) servers. These servers are located in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Netherlands, making it one of the largest online Java games in the world. The free version of RuneScape Classic was removed on August 2, 2005, due to the massive amount of cheaters.
Players using certain items can transform themselves into piles of stone, eggs, penguins, or monkeys, which help them to avoid negative gameplay effects or by gaining them access to otherwise unreachable places. Players who die reappear at one of two respawn points (the town of Lumbridge by default, though members may change it to the city of Falador upon completion of a quest) with all their skills, including hitpoints, restored to normal levels; however, they lose all but three most valuable items that they were carrying at the time of death. Two random events have been removed from the game by Jagex. There is no linear path that must be followed.
